Counselling is considered a critical component of the recovery process.
While methadone addresses the cravings and physical needs of the addiction, it does not deal
with the social, emotional and spiritual needs. Once stabilized on methadone, counsellors
can help clients make positive changes in their lives and lifestyles including exploring
the factors that contribute to drug use and those that help keep drug use away.
At the AVI Health Centre we recognize and accept that each person who is dependent on opioids enters
treatment with widely varying experiences, expectations and needs. Therefore, counselling
is tailored to meet the person “where they are at”, respecting their choices and needs
concerning their counselling and treatment goals. We recognize that some clients
may aim to reduce drug use, some to become abstinent, some may wish to eventually taper off
methadone, and others to maintain on methadone for the long term.
Counselling treatment plans are developed respecting the client’s dignity, recognizing
marginalization and the disempowering effect opioid addiction can have on ones life.
We recognize and seek to minimize the potential impact addiction may have on the
clients ability to care for children or other dependents, earn a living, find housing and
maintain healthy relationships with friends and family.
