How it works at the AVI Health Centre.

Methadone Maintenance Programs in British Columbia are all regulated through the College of Physician and Surgeons of BC (CPSBC). Physicians are trained and licensed to prescribe methadone to people who fit the criteria set out by the CPSBC. When a patient makes contact with us an appointment with a counsellor will be made to begin the intake process. A complete physical exam and consultation with one of our physicians will be scheduled as soon as possible. Consultation with a counsellor and physician will include:

    • Complete psychosocial assessment
    • Medical and medication history
    • Substance use history and patterns
    • Emotional, family and life concerns
    • Education, employment and legal status
    • Explanation of fees, services, and options
    • Signing of clinic contract
    • Health assessment
    • Physical assessment by physician
    • Other concerns

If the physician determines that Methadone is appropriate, an application will be faxed to the CPSBC for registration for methadone treatment. Once registration has been confirmed, treatment will be initiated. Once enrolled in the program, we provide ongoing counselling as well as medical information and treatment for our clients. Clients are moved through the intake phase as quickly as possible.
