Criteria for referral for Methadone treatment includes:
- Regular daily use of opioids
- Physical dependence (signs and symptoms of withdrawal)
- Social, financial and legal difficulties
- Problems with health caused by drug use
- Inability to discontinue use
- Neglect of major responsibilities due to drug use
- Preoccupation with drug (obtaining it, recovering from the effects)
- Likelihood of abstinence based therapy being successful at this time is small.
- Past history of treatment failure
- Opioid dependence for at least one year
- Liver function and urine testing
